March 7, 1956 (FGK 266)

Most of these letters are a lot of fun for me to share, as I’ve said some of them make me a bit more emotional than others, but in general this has been such a great experience for me as I’ve been learning more about who mom was – and as a fortunate and unexpected byproduct more about my grandparents, extended family and community (not to mention more about myself). The last newspaper clipping here though was really hard for me to post. As I’ve said, I typically just reach my hand in and grab a letter and share it, reading it for the first time as I type it out. That clipping, however, which is mixed in with the letters and a ton of other clippings, keeps placing itself in my hand. It hurts my heart to look at it and so I’ve continued to shove it down to the bottom of the box because I don’t want to look at it. Today I decided that’s exactly why I do need to acknowledge it. That’s how my mom lived in the hospital. In wards like that. Rows and rows of children who were sick and fighting for their health and in some cases their lives. It’s humbling.

These non-hospital related articles were just left around the two that had relevance, but I found them kind of interesting – it’s cool to see what was important in 1956. Turkeys apparently.

If you don’t know who Eric Harvie is he’s worth learning about. I learned about how he was part of the group of business men in Alberta in the early 1900s who put money into beautifying the faces of small towns in Alberta. His legacy lives on in the Glenbow Ranch – the provincial park that is just east of Cochrane. I remember his son Neil (who was older than my parents) coming to see my dad for legal advice- never would you imagine his net worth as he was such a humble and down to earth person every time I met him.

Eric Harvie Gives Cash to the City

Mayor D.H. Mackay said today the city is trying to place building sites to the west of River Park on sale as soon as possible. This followed the signing of an agreement Thursday between the city and Glenbow Investments Ltd handling the donation of 2 1/2 acres of land and $100,000 from Eric L. Harvie QC.

Mayor Surprised

The mayor was surprised when the large cheque was handed to him Tuesday. He had expected only to sign the agreement.

The signing and handing over of the cheque marks the end of a four year controversy over Mr. Harvie’s contributions.

Because, seriously, who doesn’t want to read an article about a turkey thief?? I’d so much rather read about this than the headlines of today.

Turkey Thief Goes to Jail

A 29 year old Calgary man, Douglas Shaben, Tuesday in Supreme Court was sentenced to 12 months at hard labour in Lethbridge jail after being found guilty of obtaining 17 turkeys form a local food wholesaler last Christmas by false pretences.

The stay of proceedings was granted by Chief Justice C.C. McLaurin on a second similar charge.

The sentence was handed down after evidence disclosed Shaben had posed as a buyer for Shell Oil Co and in return sold the turkeys for $241.89 to the Calgary Electric Light Department.

Character Witness:

A character witness, Robert Leslie Howell, a minister of the Christian Church testified Shaben was “a sincere fellow willing to help people at all times.” The minister also stated Shaben had been generous in his donation to the community fund.

Shaben was represented by J.S. Palmer. Earnest S. Watkins was crown prosecutor.

You know me, any opportunity to drive home the importance of wearing a helmet. My life was saved in my “rushed unplanned dismount” a few years ago because I had my helmet on.

Safety Helmet Saves Worker

And employee of Mannix Construction Ltd was saved from serious injury by his safety helmet about 9:30 am today when a piece of pipe fell on him at 9th ave and 1st St. W.

Bill McLean was taken to General Hospital by Starr’s Ambulance. He suffered head cuts but his condition was considered satisfactory.

Witnesses said the man’s safety helmet was flattened when the piece of pipe tumbled down on him.

Plaster Casts, Wheel Chairs and crutches have not dampened the spirits of the girl guides shown above. They are members of a company in the Red Cross Crippled Children’s Hospital, and are pictured during a lesson in know tying at their meeting Tuesday night. Smiling happily form left to right are: Muriel, Brenda, Emily, Patsy, who is yet a Brownie, and Lillian.

This is the photo – it sure brings a lot of feelings for me. Also though, how cool that Gene Autry came to visit. I remember when I was teaching in Airdrie years ago the kids talked about how Paul Brant would go to the Children’s Hospital and visit them – and this was when his songs like “My Heart Has a History” were topping the charts. It meant so much to them and I’ve had a lot of respect for him since then.

Cowboy Star Visits Hospital

Young patients at the Red Cross Crippled Children’s Hospital Thursday morning got a real thrill when cowboy movie star Gene Autry paid them a visit. Autry is shown above talking to a ward full of bed-ridden youngsters. He was in Calgary for a show at the Corral Thursday night.

A woman of exemplary character (FGK 264)

I know this letter was written for mom, and damn it must have made her happy to read this man’s description of her, but as a mom myself – I can imagine how humbly proud Grandma must have been. This man managed to complement the whole family, and even the entire community in his letter. How fantastic to have such wonderful things written about you! Sometimes the more sentimental letters from people I knew and loved leave me a bit teary eyed, but this one had big ole fat tears running down my face. I would feel so incredibly happy if someone spoke of my family this way. Grandma and Grandpa were remarkable people.

Gentlemen:

I have been asked to write you with reference to Miss Margaret Copithorne, of Calgary, Alberta, who is making application to enter your college as a student.

I can heartily recommend this young woman as being of exemplary character and very attractive personality, and I am quite convinced that she could profit very greatly from attendance at your institution.

I have known her and different members of her family for several years. In fact, her brother and sister attended Mount Royal College and were exceptionally fine students. Her father and mother are very respected people in their community, and she is a fortunate young woman who has been raised in a Christian home of good ideals.

With every good wish,

Yours sincerely,

Dear Mom, Dad, Marsh, and Sheila

Hi!! Just thought I’d better write you and let you know I’m still alive. These past two weeks I’ve had so many other things to think of that I”m afraid my schoolwork and letters got neglected. Don’t expect too much of my report card this time especially in French and Latin and I don’t feel Mr Rich would feel so so disposed as to give me extra good marks either. – you can imagine what they think of me!!! Right now I’m busy trying to get my schoolwork caught up.

Christmas – sorry to get this bit up so late but —- Adam’s have been swell get them something really nice. Carharts have also been nice and i don’t know what I’d do without the Colonel so… if you have time try to get something for Donna, Kay and Janet. I think I’ll buy Mrs Franks an electric alarm clock. That seems to be all I can think of right now but I’m so sleepy (I just finished my homework). Mrs franks is rally making me behave. When I was on my own I kept later hours etc but she is making me go to bed an hour earlier and seeing I do my homework!! One of the boys from school picks me up in the morning and takes me home in the afternoon. I go down to Robbie’s at noon with all the other kids from school for lunch. Mrs Adams phones me up last night and invited me over for lunch today so I went and had a nice chat with her and Nancy. There’s the nicest pair of girls my age – Bobbie Lou and Sherry – living next door and we have a lot of fun visiting back and forth. Jetty phones every night – she has got permission from her father so she will probably be leaving Rich’s any day now.

I’m sure having a lot of fun with Mrs Franks. We’re always fooling around. She considers me her daughter already I think. There’s this character here who I’m out particularly crazy over when he phones up we have a system now either I haven’t done my someone etc so I can’;t go out or we’re just leaving to go somewhere. Works too thank heaven.

We had a shower for Kay yesterday before she goes to the hospital yesterday. We went to her house in New Smyrna and had a ball. New Smyrna won’t forget us soon.

I’ve got so many invitations for Christmas I don’t know what to do. Sounds like I’m going to be busy round ‘bout that time.

Well must go do Christmas cards

Must Go Wash My Hair (FGK 255)

32 Dix Ave

Ormond Beach

Feb 3, 1958

Hi!

How are you all? For once the weather was warm enough to go out and get a tan. Some of us went down to the beach this afternoon and it was just jammed . All the race fans are in town.

I went to a party last night with Barb and some of her friends last night. We had a very good time.

It was supposed to be a wiener roast but it started to sprinkle so we moved it indoors. It got nicer later however.

We went to a rock’n’roll show last week. It was in the Peabody Auditorium. That was the first time I’ve been there. It’s a lovely building, just new.

I got my ticket all right, thanks. It will be nice to have that $18. I’m getting Col Sampson to write an educational letter for me so I should get someone else to write the personal one, and someone who has known me for a long time. Or do you think I should get Mrs Webb or Mrs Franks to do it?

I couldn’t wait for my doctor’s forms any longer and had to send in my application papers without them. Please send them down as soon as you can so I can forward them.

School is doing ok I guess. It gets rather boring sometimes but I think I’m passing. French and Latin are still my hardest subjects.

I got a letter from Sheila last week and one from Geordie.

We are all doing fine here. Mrs Webb has had a cold all weekend but so far Barbara and I haven’t got it.

Sounds like you are having lots of excitement with the curling. I’ve been trying to explain to them down here what curling is. The nearest thing to it seems to be shuffleboard.

Say “hello” to everybody for me. Must go now and wash my hair.

Keep my Tootsies Warm (FGK 253)

Cochrane, Alberta

November 25, 1953

Dear Margie

Hi! Gosh was I ever surprised to hear that you had gone to the hospital. Sis told me that you had been phoning and I was going to phone you but she said you were going to phone back (that was kind of long and drawn out wasn’t it?) Well, anyway.

Honestly, Margie, you’re going to get some awful silly letters from me. I can write pages about nothing. I’ll write “heaps” of them as you say, so don’t worry I’ll just tell David my letter writing time will be divided equally between you two. I’m mad at him. I finally get a little short letter from him on Tuesday but I haven’t got one since. No, I’m not really mad at him because he really has been busy. You know those two fraternities that were rushing him? Well he got “bid” in 100% to both of them (Gosh don’t think my buttons didn’t pop!). He joined the Phi Delta Theta Frat so he’s a ‘big guy’ now.

Mum is working in Andison’s store for about six weeks because June Morris, the regular clerk, has gone to Kelowna to lean the business of Andison’s store there. They’re going to move it to Cochrane or something. Well, anyway I’ve got the job of making supper for “my family” every night (they’re going to get spaghetti quite often). Nothing like learning when you’re young eh?

Oh, do you know what? I made the cheerleading team. Was I ever surprised because there were a lot of really good kids. I’m pretty proud of myself anyways. Heather made it too.

I think I’m going to work on the year book this year too. I don’t know what the set up is yet though. I think Heather is too, and Lawrence Copithorne, too.

Do you know what else? I got a brand new pair of flight boots to keep my ‘tootsies’ warm. They’ve got squirrel lining in them. Gosh!

Gosh, Margie, if you think of anything I could give David for Christmas for heaven’s sake let me know. I’m wracking my poor feeble little brain to death. Mum and Dad thought it would be a good idea for our family and his family to get together and get him a portable record player. That would be a good idea because then I could give him that record “Dream on my Love, Dream on”. Let me know what you think about it because I just don’t know. It’s an awful problem. If he was a girl it would be so much easier (ha ha).

I might be going to the dance at JP tonight although I’m not to fussy about it.

Well I just had super and I also found out I”m not going to the dance because it’s snowing and Mum’s afraid it’ll turn into a blizzard. They’re having the macasin (? Maybe moccasin? ) dance tomorrow night so I”ll be able to go to that.

Well, seeing that I have such a weak brain I can’t think of anything else. I think I”ll go to bed now and catch up on some sleep. Honestly I’m about beat.

Bye for now. If I get up early enough I’ll write more before I mail this.

Didn’t get up early enough, will write more later.

Big Grey Cup Game Tomorrow(FGK 252)

I don’t know who Kay is, but she seems to be somehow connected to Jumping Pound – at least enough to want to go to a dance. Although, the dances here used to be legendary so who knows. Anyone know these people?

Dear Marg,

Well, was I ever surprised when I heard you were in the hospital. I bet you couldn’t remember where you were at first. It would sure seem funny after being away so long. Are there still a lot of kids you know in there?

Well, school is still dragging on. Gee, is French ever hard. I don’t know if I’ll ever get it. Don’t take it next year unless you know you’re going to have a real good teacher. That’s one reason I find it so hard. I think, because Donna and Elaine find it fairly easy, they have a good teacher.

Let’s get off such a boring subject. There’s a big dance at Jumping Pound tonight. Wish I could have gone but Dad wouldn’t let me go because it was too cold. I was going to go out with Delores and Maureen Bowlen. All the kids were going to go.

Big Grey Cup game tomorrow eh? I’ll bet you’ll really enjoy it. You’d better be careful how you bet or you’ll lose all your bobby-pins. Have you got a bet on with Claudine for it yet? How did you and Claudia turn out in all your bets on the season’s games. Last time I heard you were handing a dollar over.

Well, I guess this is all for now. It’s time I went to bed. Will write more tomorrow.

Wake up!!! (It’s after ten). Mum and Dad have gone over to Safeway’s now and when they come home they are going downtown. I’m going to begin looking around for Christmas presents. What a job!!

Elaine, Rose and I went to the show “Lucy Gallant”. Was it ever good!! It was a story of a girl who loved clothes, and she came to a small little town and opened up a big fashion store, and then she fell in love with a rancher there and had to pick between him and her store. Of course in the end she picked him!!

We’e got our phone now. Our number is 494949. If you’re ever up and near a phone in there (this if if they let you use the phone) phone Elaine and I.

I don’t know if I should start this page or not. I don’t know what else to tell you.

Are you listening to the Grey Cup Parade? (I think it is) I sure hope Edmonton wins again this year. If Calgary can’t do it, it will have to be Edmonton, just to keep it in Albert eh?

Here it is Saturday night and the Edmonton Eskimos did it. Even if I don’t understand football I am glad when someone wins!!

Well this seems to be all for now. Write when you’ve some news (soon).

Love, Kay

PS. I’ve sent in Moments to Remember for you, tell me in a letter if you have any favourite songs.

Dearest Coppie (mom)

“Hi ya kiddo!!!” I decided to write you instead of wasting money by phoning (Scotch you know!!)

I haven’t even been home for the last week! I’ve finally ditched Bowness for a while to come and stay with my grandmother on the North Hill, a block from our old house at that.

I’ve just been debating on whether to go see Bill Haley on the 22nd or to go to a show. I’m dying to see him! We should get together and to Marg!??!!

I haven’t’ been doing much during the day except to study!!! Big deal eh?? What you been doing lately besides study “Coppie”??? Will you be going to a high school next year or what? Man!! I’d sure love to go to one for “ten” but I’ll bet a dollar to a doughnut, I’ll end up doing it by correspondence. Bah!!

Any parties or dances lately?? I never get to do anything at dear old Bowness. We probably won’t get to Calgary ‘til August!!

Gosh! Im dying to hear your records “Coppie”!! I’m tired of having “jazz sessions” so my self. Any new (I can’t make this word out – it looks like Bastics but according to urban dictionary – the only definition I could find- that means someone who is both a bastard and a spastic. Will be tucking that away in my memory but I’m pretty sure that’s not what she meant).?? Guess you would’ve told me when I saw you last.

Do you ever hear from Janet or any of the old gang?? Marg fried, Valerie, Zoe, Donna, etc?? I don’t.

Any “dolls” you can introduce me to Marg? Desperate galoot (?) aren’t I?

Guess I’ll end her here since I’ll be talking to you on Tuesday. I hope to be hearing from you kiddo!

Bye now

Babies and appendectomies (FGK 249)

This letter makes me grateful I never became a nurse – having to do parent duty for sick kids was enough for me. How great that she mentions how much she likes this town, especially since she also mentions a certain man who is joining them on an outing – and he became my uncle which I consider a huge blessing – and then she spent the rest of her life in the area. Gosh Auntie Sheila had a lot of character. Also, when I was young and living in Lethbridge for school Auntie Sheila was the only person who regularly wrote me letters. I don’t even think I responded (I should have a talk with teenage me), but I appreciated them so much and they made me feel less lonely. I do think she also wrote to others of us who went away when we were young. Seeing her ask for letters (twice now) makes me realize that she deeply understood the importance of loved ones reaching out and letting you know that you are important to them.

Hi!!

Just bot back from the store and a couple of little boys about 8 or 9 years old whistled at me – I whistled back and you never saw such a stunned pair. I guess girls don’t do that here.

I’ll be like Margie and start off by answering your questions

Mrs Oldfield appreciated your invitation very much but she feels she should keep pretty close to her DR. She goes to see him quite frequently.

Seven nurses work here and one girl that is a combination of lab tech and X-ray technician – also a nursing aid.

I hope Barry is ok

I don’t want to take piano lessons I just haven’t got it in me.

She’s (Miss Simmons) making next week’s times out tonight so I don’t know when I get off.

No I didn’t go to the Armistice Dance. Anne said it wouldn’t be any good.

Hope Auntie Lottie hasn’t got TB

Yes we have TV but I haven’t’ been in to watch it so I didn’t see Elvis Presley.

Our meals are quite good.

I didn’t have a baby Wednesday nite.

The people down here sure raise big families. They’re all young girls about 24-25 with five or six kids. It seems that the only thing people have wrong with themselves down here are babies and appendectomies.

You know that Aunt of Annes that’s in the hospital, well I gave her an enema today and right in the middle of it she started vomiting all over the place. I tried to soothe her but she said “oh that’s all right nurse I feel much better.” She was saying this between gushes. Cheerful person.

Anyway, when I was re-sterilizing the tables I let it air dry – completely forgot about it – and the table was just a heap of red goo. Guess I”m spoilt. Been used to having things sterilized for me. Anyway rubber sure stinks.

Every time any of the visitors go past the desk someone always leaves us some candy so we’re well stocked up. Nice town this.

Anne and I nearly always go to that restaurant where we were, for a milkshake every nite. Went to a dance at the school at Red Cross (that’s the name of a place eight miles west of here). There was nobody there but old people and their kids so we came back early.

Anne, Bob, Ted Burger, Mrs Oldfield and I are going to the show tonight (Pete Kelly Blues).

Guess I’ll sleep tomorrow although I’m certainly not tired, guess it’s the altitude.

What’s the matter with the rest of the family – can’t they write? Guess I’ll have to send a (I can’t make this word out – listor? butor? Ugh – I feel like I fell flat on her threat lol) up there.

Sitting on the front step waiting for the postman(FGK 245)

So what was the parcel Uncle Marshall sent???? Cliff hangers all over the place with these letters! Did grandma and grandpa find a good place? And why was mom at the age of 15 allowed to be out until 3:30 am???? I have questions haha!

Jan 5, 1956

Hi!!

Marshall’s parcel hasn’t arrived yet and I’m consumed by curiosity so I’m sitting on the front step waiting for the postman to come by so I can ask him about it. I’ve spent almost the whole morning here so it had better come today!! I also owe him some money so….

School started Thursday thank heaven, terrible to say but I was actually getting tired of the holidays and I’ll have to tell you this, by the end of them I was so tired of movies I refused to go to them!! I know you’d like to hear that!

I went over to Adam’s New Years Eve for dinner and then went to a drive-in it was one of those marathon affairs and we didn’t get out until 3:30am – you can see why I’m sick of them!!

New Year’s Day I didn’t do anything except sleep and write thank you notes – I could have gone to a movie but for some queer reason didn’t.

I’ve done some looking around for a place for you to stay but it’s rather hard without a definite date of your arrival as most of the places are booked up for February. The Shaliman may have a room for a few days but it is doubtful, it would amount to about $30 per week. Mrs Franks and I went to see a motel down Volusia a way – a few hundred yards from the airport entrance. They’d be quite close to us but not near the school and you’d need a car. The linen and everything is furnished for $40 a week and it has quite a nice kitchenette. There’s a bedroom – living room combined. It would be about the cheapest you could get and still be in a good clean etc place. I phoned Mrs Adam’s about it and most of the places over there (if there’s vacancy) are $60 to $75 a week. I could probably get you some on the ocean if you like but it’ll have to be soon because you just can’t get anything good in this town unless it’s in advance that’s whyI want to know the date of your arrival. Mrs Franks doesn’t recommend the Shaliman because their best rooms are taken and you would only get one on the third floor and of course you couldn’t cook. Tell me about how much you want to pay and that will save a lot of time and whether on the peninsula or the mainland.

The Colonel gave us our report cards the other day. He said I could sign my own, I’ll send it up to you all but don’t sign it because I already have but I thought you might like to see it.

We’ve gotten over our cold snap now and it’s back to 75 degrees. Which reminds me, Mrs Franks says not to send down any more warm clothes because except for a very short spell I’ll never get a chance to wear them

Later

The mailman never did come so all my waiting was in vain. I went over to see Jetty after lunch. We went on a walk on the beach and had a nice long talk. We don’t see each other very often but make up by phoning ever day. We had a lot of lost time to make up for though. She’s doing just fine and has a good place to stay. She always asks about you and sends her love.

Mrs Franks was sure pleased with the pastry forks. They were a bit late arriving but I was glad you got something so nice for her. She deserves it.

Did I tell you we took the clock I gave her for Christmas back and got a lawn chair instead. She also got an extra one so when you come down you’ll have a place to sit out in the sun and get a tan.

I’ve got some more parcels this week, a manicure set from Aunt Nan, a pen from Kumlin’s, gloves from Geordie, lamp from Janet, soap from Donna, nylons, pen, candy and jigsaw puzzle from the Red Cross, china figure from Raymond, wallet from Joan Whittle, and necklace from Lou and Kay Copithorne. Aunt Annie and ? And is on gave mea toilet set.

I can’t think of any news. Mr Adam’s is still in the hospital but will be out sometime next week – that’s about all – I sent him a card.

We’re going to have a steak dinner tonight!! So I must go and get ready – let it never be said we don’t eat well!!

thanks for your letter Marshall, it was very good.

Will try and write you again soon.

Love Marg xxx

PS Sheila sent me another $10!!! Goll-ee

Am enclosing letter I received from Mr Vaughn today

The Shaliman Hotel *Daytona’s most distinctive hotel*

1/4/57

Miss Copithorne

Mrs Goodale tells me your mother and father plan on being here during the month of February and would like to get a small housekeeping apartment or efficiency but if they cannot they would like rates on a twin room with private bath for the month.

Since February is our heavy month and since the auto and motorcycle races consume nearly the entire month the reservations are always completely filled for the month.

It will be next to impossible to get an apartment of any kind unless our folks do so very soon and then the rates for Feb are very high.

We do have a nice corner room on the third floor which is two short flights up. It has twin beds and private bath and we will rent it to your folks for $37.50 per week but that of course would depend on knowing they wanted it waiting say 10 days from now for undoubtedly we will have a great number of requests very soon.

So will you write your folks and send this letter along then they can write back and I presume the room will be available by the time they answer.

Sincerely The Shaliman hotel (Sherrod N. Vaughn)

Dear Margaret,

I am sorry I have never got in touch with you before now. I have heard news of you through Janet several times but don’t know what you are doing now. I was talking to Lillian the other night and she is finally going to start walking. I suppose you knew Maryanne had to quit University at Christmas because she fell. She had another operation at the General Hospital and was moved back to the hospital at Ponoka this week. I also talked to Isabel but haven’t seen her yet. Anne Pettea is in the RC but I don’t know if they’d let me in to see her or not. I work every day except Sat afternoon and Sunday so maybe I could be sneaked in some night.

I am working out at the Provincial Labortories out at the Sanatorium for the summer. I am really enjoying my work and the staff is wonderful to work with. I enjoyed my university year very much but had to study a lot. I am sure glad for a rest now.

I like Calgary but after Edmonton I can get myself well lost. I’ve only been here a week so haven’t got around too much but it won’t take long to get to know the city. I have a lovely place to room and board. If you’re in the city any evening or weekend with nothing to do let me know as I would love to have a visit with you. My phone number is 446753.

Did your sister graduate last year or this year? I’ve lost all track of time since I left the RC. I suppose you can still go back for a check-up but the rest of the old gang are over the age limit and have to call on our doctors downtown . George Lane and Carl are out teaching and Don Farmer is going to take commerce at Varsity. I also heard what Willard was doing but I forget now.

Maybe you can tell me some news abut the kids.

I am writing this letter during lunch hour. We have 1 1/2 hours off each noon so we have a lot of free time. When the weather gets nice we hope to play tennis, golf, or swim. Meanwhile I am still crocheting hankie edges. I think I am working on the one I was doing when I left the hospital.

I hope to see or hear from you when you get time.

A friend, Verna
