Swans, snow, and highway clean up

We had our 4H highway cleanup. Our club had been really lucky and we have a great (and quiet) highway to clean. And showing how awesome our community is, we had several non member volunteers come to help us out since we are such a small club.

The weather was less than ideal, but the kids were great sports about it, and we were actually done quite quickly.

After we joined together for lunch, laughs, and visits.

The slough on the way home was full of swans – happily swimming even though the snow made it feel much more like winter than springtime.

I feel so blessed to be part of this community.

4h and coffee shops

The kids had multi judging with 4H today and when we got there they kicked the parents out. We did the only reasonable thing and spent the next few hours visiting in the local coffee shop.

I forgot how much I like the town of Olds.

I needed the soul nourishment of the visit.

I remembered how grateful I am for our club and my tribe.

Speeches and sushi

The kids had the next level of competition at 4h communications day. They both did really well, but neither moved on. My cousins kids both moved up to the next level and we are looking forward to cheering them on.

It was a good lesson in losing graciously and I really feel like all the kids did a great job. Just getting up in front of all those people and talking is an accomplishment.

Then the club took us out for sushi and we ate and laughed and shared stories. That is just as important as the competition – the bonding and relationship building.

Curling fun

It was a curling day with our 4h club today. My kids have only curled one other time and it was at the same event last year. They’re total novices, but they love it. And it was fun since the other teams weren’t really experienced either.

Competition is fun, but sometimes just going out and having a good time is even better (with some made up competition included)

Everyone was full of smiles as we left the rink

Communication Day 2019

It was speech day at our 4H club today. Both kids were nervous and complaining about how they didn’t want to do it all week – but both got up and gave fantastic speeches. They are quite gifted public speakers it seems, and both have moved up to the next level to compete.

The boy, who likes it more than the girl, could actually have a career as a speaker. I was told by a leader today that he reminded them of my dad – charismatic, able to explain his point clearly, and well composed. That’s high praise – my dad was a really skilled speaker and really enjoyed drawing people in. Winning aside, that was huge praise for the boy.

4H has been a huge blessing for our family.

4H weigh day

It was weigh day at our 4H club this morning. I love our club – it’s small but the families are awesome and I’m grateful to be part of it

We finished off the day seeing the Grinch movie. I love the story – love can conquer all. It really is the most important thing in the world. We choose either fear or love every second of every day.

Fear still gets in there a lot, but love is winning. I can feel it.

Awards banquet

Tonight was the awards banquet for the kids’ 4H club. Our club is small enough that each kid gets at least one award, which is awesome considering how much work everyone does over the year.

I was feeling very blessed as we were there tonight. For a few minutes I was overwhelmed with sadness as I looked around at the grandparents and relatives from other members who were there to celebrate. But then I realized that since we are related to half the club, my kids also had family there! I’ve been really missing my parents lately and I think this is how it came out

However, the evening was a huge success and much fun was had by all.

Highway cleanup

It was the annual 4h highway cleanup today – the more I do with our club the more I not only like 4H but appreciate how awesome our club is. We seem to have avoided the politics and bickering and just really work together and get along. That’s a huge gift – I’m grateful for all the friendships I’m making or deepening.

And today was absolutely beautiful and we had a great stretch of highway

Deepening relationships

The boy competed again today with his speech for 4H and although he didn’t move on, I was so amazed and impressed with how well he did. I know that I look at my kids with mom goggles, but damn- he’s a good public speaker. And he just lets it flow – there are no notes he reads off of. So proud.

One of the great things about the kids being in 4H and me being on the Hall Board is it gets us knowing people in our community again – long time neighbors and extended family.

We were at a family party tonight and I was thinking how instead of just chatting now, we have deepened so many of our relationships and we are becoming closer to our people.

It’s important. My relationships and my people are the most important thing in my life – and I’m so glad we have this tribe here.
