A History in Photos 26 (FGK 183)

How fantastic is this first photo? I know I’ve seen it in other publications, and probably read the story behind it, but I’d forgotten until my uncle told it again at Christmas. Margy Buckley – the only person left standing during the 1918 flu pandemic. There she is out feeding cows and looking more stylish than I will look at any point today.

Remember the summer Uncle Marshall fell off the bailer and broke both his hands? As a kid these things seemed huge and I couldn’t believe he fell off one- as an adult they still look gigantic and I can’t even imagine what that fall must have been like. There’s a lot to be said for the inner strength and toughness that one needs to be a rancher.

August 1978. Percy Copithorne in front of the log barn he built when a young man.
Percy and Edna Copithorne and Roy Wills (I zoomed on on the woman and I don’t think she’s grandma. I wonder if she’s Jean – her face shape is the same?)
A hunting party at theRobertsons with Percy Copithorne. Clarence Copithorne on extreme right.
Percy Copithorne on a big rock in California. 1940. Grandma spoke of a trip they took to California in 1940 before mom was born – this must have been it. I love this photo – one time when I was fairly young (under 10) my parents drove us out to Long Beach on Vancouver Island for the day. I also ran out to a big rock to look at the ocean – only suddenly the tide came in and I was stranded out in the middle of the ocean. I was probably on the equivalent of the farther away rocks. Poor dad was trying to stay calm to coach me as to when it was safe to run back but I could tell he was terrified. I made it back safely and was never taken there again haha. Now I can blame genetics.
Sheila and Percy Copithorne
Percy Copithorne on right with fish he caught
Frank Copithorne, Louis Copithorne, Percy Copithorne, Bill Copithorne. Holding the big fish Percy caught. Now, I remember Grandpa (Percy) being very tall. So the fact that he’s kinda short or average in this photo tells me the other men are REALLY tall. I had no idea Uncle Louis was so tall, although I only have very vague (but awesome) memories of him. Uncle Bill sure looks like Phil don’t you think?

Percy and Edna with the salmon caught near Victoria.
We all know this photo from the Hall – it’s hanging on the stage. Percy on violin, Marjorie on the piano and I can’t remember who the other two are, but I know I’ve had it labeled somewhere else.

The next couple of days are of Grandpa (Percy Copithorne). I have such great memories of Grandpa, the fact that I was only 7 when he died and I have so many (relatively speaking) memories of going on adventures with him tells me that he must have spent a lot of time with us.

I’m assuming this was when Grandma and Grandpa went to Africa
Margie Ramsay, Percy Copithorne, Maria Nicoll (I see the painting we discussed a few days ago in the background. I wonder if there are two copies or if that one somehow migrated back here? Uncle Ted mentioned it was a Roland Gissing and I remember mom saying that as well. It shows up one more time in today’s photos too)
Aileen, Sheila, Margie, and Margaret on Percy 1949
Percy Copithorne signing a guest book for a 21st birthday party at Clarence Copithorne’s
Percy Copithorne 1920. Hunting trip
Marshall Copithorne, Richard Copithorne, Frank Copithorne, Percy Copithorne, Louis Copithorne, Don McKinnon, Harry Nicoll. (Fishing party)
Margie, Edna, Percy. I’m guessing the baby is Dixie? (And the painting one more time – it seems as though it migrated around a lot. It’s in a different spot here.)
Left to Right: Bill Piper, Kenneth Ebenezer (?) Percy Copithorne, Marshall Copithorne, at breakfast April 1964. Somehow when Grandma said she’d disliked the small window on the south end of the kitchen I had thought they’d replaced it with the stained glass right away – but here it is with the old regular window in 1964. What an improvement the stained glass window makes to this room!! That bone painting above the door was done by Grandma and hung there until my sister inherited it and now it hangs in her house.

Remember when Grandma was the Heritage Belle? She was so excited about that day. She was 81 in that photo – always classy.

Cows!
The feedlot at Marshall’s
More cows!
I wasn’t sure if the John Grandma referred to here is Dad. If it was and if she wrote “John ‘helping’ at branding” with the air quotes – I’d just like to say – nice shade Grandma. Perhaps they are just ink spots, it’s another John, and I don’t see my dad in this photo at all.
This photo has Dad in it. He didn’t help with this sort of thing much – between being not a rancher and having allergies to all things ranching (animals, smoke, hay..) he could only do this in small doses. Anyway….. Branding calves June/71. Bob Copithorne in foreground. John Ramsay (Glasses on) holding calf to be branded.

Today’s photos are kind of exciting for me because they’re of Grandma’s family (the Browns). I don’t really know much about the Brown family so I really appreciate these photos.

60th wedding anniversary. Aunt Strutt. My mother’s sister (Edna’s aunt)
Four of my cousins. Uncle William Brown’s family Cousin Gertie on the left
Martha Brown with first granddaughter Aileen (now Mrs. John Copithorne) and daughter Edna- Aileen’s aunt – Mrs Percy Copithorne.
Mrs . Frank Brown (Martha) holding first grandchild Aileen Davies
Left to right: Martha Brown and friend 1928
Frank Brown, Cochrane (I’m not sure how old this photos is, but it’s barely holding together – either a well loved photo or a very very old one)
Martha Moore Thompson of Pembroke Ontario. My mother (Edna’s) Martha Brown
As far as we can figure (with some good detective work by my cousin Jen) this is Martha Brown’ mother. So my generation’s great-great grandmother. I had already shared this photo – but now we know (I think) who she is.

We weren’t totally sure- but based on the photo below we guessed Uncle Ted and Dixie? Also – anyone know where this photo was taken? We have the same painting hanging above the fireplace here (it’s a view from the yard here towards the mountains, but the mountains are painted wrong – they’re the ones you’d see closer to Bragg Creek I believe).
